Exhibition: The New American Farmer

In the 1970s food became political. The United States embraced policies that would create overabundant crop yields and plentiful numbers of inexpensive food-like products. Sadly, not long after those policies were enacted family farms began to collapse and agribusiness began its operation of widespread, massively subsidized mono-cropped farms. Over the past several years, however, there is a new generation of farmers who are rejecting a government subsidy and chemically based agricultural approach. They use sustainable and/or organic methods and are creating whole, healthy, natural foods that are sold directly to consumers or through local distribution networks. Over the past several years Tom Persinger has been creating portraits and recording oral interviews with some of the men and women who are using a sustainable approach in Southwestern Pennsylvania. These are their stories.
Workshop: Pinhole Photography for your DSLR

A pinhole photograph is one made without the use of the curved glass of a lens but instead uses only a tiny aperture through which light enters the camera. Pinhole photographs require long(er) exposures, offer infinite depth of field, and provide many other interesting image anomalies! In this exciting workshop with Tom Persinger, founder and director of F295.org, the internets premier site for pinhole and alternative photographic practices, you will create a pinhole “lens” for your digital slr camera! Some have found that this simple device reinvigorates their photographic practice and offers new ways to see the photographic world!
After we build our pinhole lenses we’ll take them into the field for some pinhole shooting! Bring your laptop and after we’ll review and discuss your images!
Please bring a tripod and your DSLR camera. Please provide brand & type of camera upon registration (eg: Nikon D80, Canon 5D, etc). All materials for pinhole lens will be supplied. Cost TBA.
